National Minimum Wage

If working, you might qualify for extra benefits. The National Minimum Wage for most 16 and 17 year olds is £3.64 per hour. Apprentices under the age of 19 (or over 19 and in their 1st year) may not get it. 18-20 year olds and some older trainees in their first 6 months get £4.92. The rate for most workers aged 21 and over is £5.93. Call the Pay and Work Rights Helpline on 0800 917 2368.

Nearly all workers have the right to at least 5.6 weeks paid holiday per year.
Nearly all workers aged 18 and over have the right not to have to work more than 48 hours per week on average.

If you are 16/17, you should not have to work more than 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week and have the right to take time off during working hours to take up study or training which leads to relevant qualifications. Nearly all workers have the right to daily and weekly rest breaks. There are special rules for night workers and young workers. See: www.pers.org.uk
